Organizations are fast adopting IP networks to handle their data requirements -
e-mail, intranet, streaming, IM, and Voice over IP (VoIP).
IP IS A GREAT CHOICE FOR VISUAL COMMUNICATION. SCALABLE. SECURE. MANAGEABLE.
Any data network capable of supporting high speed, high volume data traffic can be
used for video over IP - often with little or no modification. With an IP network
in place, organizations can easily take advantage of video over IP at little or no
incremental cost. In addition, video only requires bandwidth when it is being used,
so it is a cost-effective alternative to dedicated lines.
WHY ISN'T EVERYONE USING IP FOR VIDEO COMMUNICATION?
Until now, IP was used to dial within the enterprise and ISDN was used to call
between enterprises. ISDN is expensive and not available everywhere, but IP is
already present in most enterprises for data - why not use it for video? In the past,
getting video securely through firewalls and the lack of a universal dialing plan for IP
made it difficult - or impossible - to call between enterprises on IP.
THE CHALLENGES
FIREWALLS: Support for real-time video communication with network firewalls can
require the opening and closing of multiple communication ports during a single session.
Even when a port can be securely opened, essential features such as encryption are
lost. This technology challenge has prevented companies and organizations from
placing affordable video calls outside their own networks on a large scale.
DIAL PLANS: Without a universal dial plan for video over IP, there is no way to place
calls between organizations. Most organizations utilize shared IP addresses without
a mechanism to route the external calls.

TANDBERG's Expressway solution for firewall traversal creates a secure path
through firewalls without compromising your IP security. With support for URI dialing,
Expressway also implements a global, massively
scalable dial plan - making it possible to dial
between enterprises and allow communication with
suppliers, customers and home office workers.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
Firewall Traversal
Required components - TANDBERG Border Controller and either a TANDBERG MXP
endpoint or the TANDBERG Gatekeeper
TANDBERG MXP endpoints: MXP endpoint and the Border Controller create a secure
path through the firewall and the MXP endpoint connects to the outside world through
the Border Controller
Other endpoints: Any endpoint registered to the TANDBERG Gatekeeper can utilize the
Gatekeeper and the Border Controller to create the secure path through the firewall
and connect to the outside world through the Border Controller.
Dialing Plans
Support for URI dialing - between different private address spaces using email

TANDBERG's Expressway solution enables multiple devices to continue to share a single public address and avoid costly upgrades. Using URI-dialing, Expressway translates e-mail type addresses so that the destination of a video call can be quickly and accurately determined and the call placed successfully. It is practical technology that keeps video traffic flowing between your enterprise, supply chain and customers.
Home office workers simply plug an MXP endpoint into their DSL router and the MXP endpoint registers with the Border Controller - the endpoint becomes part of the enterprise dial plan (simply dial 4 digit extension as if they were in the office!) and no endpoint configuration is needed. Branch offices benefit from being a part of the enterprise dial plan and utilize the same 4 digit extensions as the main office or headquarters. Enterprise to enterprise calling is now possible - URI dialing and e-mail style addresses allow inter-company video calls to take place as easily as a phone call or e-mail.
